Types of Barcode Scanners:
Pen-type or wand-type readers –This scanner has a LED light and a photodiode on its tip that is used to scan the barcodes on various items. You have to carefully pass the scanner over the barcode at a slow speed. These are the most inexpensive type of barcode scanners.
Laser barcode scanners – Works just like the pen type reader but is more convenient and gives more accurate results. It uses a laser beam that sweeps across the barcode and reads the information accurately. It can read a barcode from 15 cms to 60 cms away. Some long-range laser scanners can read from half a metre to 3 metres away. This is the most popular type of barcode scanner and is widely used in retail.
CCD (charge coupled device) barcode scanners – Also called LED scanners. These use hundreds of tiny LED lights that shoot directly at the barcode. These types of scanners are very popular in POS or Point of Sale Applications. CCD Scanners need to be 3cms to 10 cms away from the barcode, otherwise, it will not work. It cannot read any barcode that is longer than the scanner monitor.
Imager barcode scanners or camera-based scanners – This scanner has a video camera inside. It takes a picture of the barcode and uses a sophisticated digital decoding technique. This scanner can read a barcode no matter how you position it against the scanner. It makes for much faster transactions.
2D scanners –These types of barcode scanners also have the capability to scan 2D barcodes, QR codes, and even Australian Post 4-state barcodes.
Anti-microbial barcode scanners – These are high-performance barcode scanners that have built-in anti-microbial agents to minimise or stop the spread of viruses and infectious bacteria. This type of scanners is used in hygiene-sensitive applications, such as health care, among others.
Bluetooth barcode scanners – These are wireless scanners that rely on Bluetooth technology. They give you the freedom to scan data anywhere at any time without being restricted by cable connections.
Fixed barcode scanners – These scanners are permanently mounted on a piece of equipment or on a surface. The items with barcodes are scanned past the monitor.
WIFI-dependent scanners – This type of scanner needs WIFI (WLAN) in order to perform. If there is no internet connection through WIFI, the device will not work.
Benefits of Using a Barcode Scanner:
Eliminates human error
Incorrect data entry and misinterpretations are often made when handling inventory by paper and pencil. Unless the database input was also previously entered incorrectly, pointing and scanning barcodes will record and update the exact details while removing the human error factor.
Real-time inventory updates
Tethered to a data entry point (terminal, computer, POS, etc.), scanners help the logistics team keep track of warehouse items by scanning incoming and outgoing products easily, recording stock in or stock out activities, update current information, and assist in providing historical data.

Scan regardless of the environment
Whether the storage area has too much light or too dark, scanners can be used in pretty much any condition as long as there is a visible barcode to scan.
Simple implementation
Most barcode scanners operate with only a simple driver and minimal programming so installing the device should be easy. Having expertise with a barcode scanner is not really needed as well since using the device is quite intuitive.
Time efficiency
Instead of having to record everything by hand, barcode scanners provide the option of automatically logging all information into a database. Transactions when buying or selling also benefit with faster processing times.
Cost savings
In relation to everything stated above, a business can save on costs related to supplies, inputs errors, employee wages if extra people are necessary, and other unnecessary resources when switching to a barcode scanner.
Uses of Barcode Scanners Across Many Industries:
Barcode scanners have found many uses in numerous industries. Four notable such uses:
Medication administration:
Barcodes on the patients' wristbands contain medication information, their name, and their primary physician. Staff can bring the information on their EMR via a quick swipe of their medical grade tablet and its built-in barcode reader. The process ensures that the right patients are getting the correct medication and dosage.
Shipping/receiving:
With inventory scanning, companies can track their packages at each stage of the delivery process: when leaving their facilities, en route via delivery service, and acceptance by the customer.
Specimen collection:
Barcodes ensure patient information accuracy as their blood and other specimens are sent to labs for processing and the results are uploaded for providers' review.
Work in process (WIP):
Manufacturers can use barcode scanners to track every piece of raw material used in their products (WIP). The information gathered can be used in various ways, from finding product defects to keeping costs down.
Packaging & Shipping:
Shipping Method & Delivery Time: Fastest 8-12 business days by DHL,UPS,FedEx,EMS and so on couriers or sea-cargo air-cargo appointed from the customer.
